SS, 1st Pattern, Sport Shirt Insignia.  Diameter 4 'Examples of the 1st pattern --white runes on a black field-- SS sport shirt insignia are very rare in any form. Early versions were chain stitched. This example was machine woven on a strip of cloth and was very likely the predecessor of the more standardized and RZM manufactured  BEVO style insignia; while the RZM manufactured examples rarely surface, this style of insignia is more rarely encountered by a long shot!To show the probable progression of manufacture of the SS, 1st pattern, sport shirt insignia, some examples of chain stitched, machine woven on a strip, and RZM manufactured insignia are shown. The small SS insignia that was manufactured on a cloth strip and in a similar manner as the one for sale here has a diameter of about 2 inches, and was likely meant for wear on the sport shorts and/or on the sport training suit blouse. This insignia would make a great addition to any collection, SS or otherwise.
